Trudeau acknowledges pro-Khalistan presence in Canada amid rising tensions with India
Toronto: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, during Diwali celebrations on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, acknowledged the presence of “pro-Khalistan supporters in Canada,” while clarifying that they do not represent the broader Sikh community.
This marks Trudeau’s first public recognition of a pro-Khalistan faction within Canada. He reiterated that this group does not embody the entire Sikh community.
The statement follows an incident in Brampton where alleged Khalistani separatists reportedly attacked Hindu-Canadian pilgrims within a temple. Prime Minister Trudeau condemned the attack, asserting that every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely. He thanked local authorities for protecting the community and swiftly initiating an investigation.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep concern over the safety of Indian nationals in Canada, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic tensions. Relations between India and Canada have been strained since Trudeau alleged possible Indian involvement in the 2023 killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, accusations that New Delhi has dismissed as baseless.
