Trudeau government announces crackdown on illegal immigrants and temporary visa overstayers
Toronto: The Trudeau government has announced plans to deport a significant number of illegal immigrants as part of a broader crackdown on immigration violations.
Immigration Minister Mark Miller said that the era of cheap labor in Canada is over, emphasizing that employers must now hire workers at higher wage rates.
Miller revealed that individuals who entered Canada on temporary visas but failed to leave on time could face mass deportations in the coming months.
Many of those targeted for deportation are believed to have received removal orders over the past eight years but have evaded authorities by frequently changing locations, complicating efforts by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to track them.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, Miller highlighted widespread exploitation within the temporary foreign worker program, particularly in sectors like agriculture and food processing.
He noted that workers in these industries often do not receive fair wages. The federal government has since restricted the influx of temporary foreign workers, signaling the end of an era where cheap foreign labor was readily available.
Mark Miller said that as they enter the new year, the situation will get better and the number of temporary foreign workers will decrease further.
He argued that the focus is on giving PR to workers present in Canada and the trend of calling workers from abroad has been reduced.
