UK MPs appeal Sunak to press for release of British Sikh held in India

New Delhi: More than 70 MPs from the UK, cutting across party lines, have asked Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to demand the immediate release of a British Sikh imprisoned in India.
Sunak is in New Delhi to attend the G20 leaders’ summit this week. In the letter, the MPs urged Sunak to urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi to release Jagtar Singh Johal immediately, a media report said.
Johal has been in jail in India for five years. Johal from Dumbarton was in Punjab for his wedding when he was arrested in Jalandhar on November 4, 2017 for his alleged role in the killings carried out by the banned terror outfit Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF).
His family says 36-year-old Johal is being tortured and is currently lodged in Tihar Jail. He has been made to sign blank papers. India, on the other hand, has denied such allegations. Johal faces 10 charges for a possible death penalty.
