US holds talks with Russia and Ukraine over possible ceasefire
Washington: US negotiators met with Russian representatives a day after holding separate discussions with Ukrainian officials on a possible ceasefire in Ukraine. Both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of undermining efforts to end the three-year-long war.
On Wednesday, Russia and Ukraine tentatively agreed to a limited ceasefire following talks between US President Donald Trump and the leaders of both countries. However, disagreements remain over which infrastructure should be protected from attacks.
The White House said the ceasefire agreement would include protections for “energy infrastructure,” while the Kremlin confirmed that energy facilities were specifically mentioned. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, however, said he wanted railways and ports to be safeguarded as well.
Russian state news agencies TASS and RIA-Novosti reported that US and Russian representatives met in Riyadh on Wednesday morning. Earlier, US and Ukrainian officials had held talks in the Saudi capital on Sunday.
Serhiy Leshchenko, an adviser to Zelensky, said the Ukrainian delegation would remain in Riyadh and hoped to continue negotiations with the US.
