US lawmakers challenge DOJ probe into Adani Group, warn of impact on India ties
Washington: Six US lawmakers have raised concerns over the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) investigation into the Adani Group’s alleged bribery scandal, warning that it could strain relations with India.
In a letter to US Attorney General Pamela Bedi on February 10, lawmakers Lance Gooden, Pat Fallon, Mike Hardopoulos, Brendan Gill, William R. Timmons, and Brian Babin questioned the DOJ’s “controversial decisions” under the Biden administration.
US prosecutors have accused industrialist Gautam Adani of paying $250 million in bribes to Indian officials to secure favorable conditions for solar power contracts.
They allege that this information was concealed from US banks and investors, from whom the Adani Group had raised billions of dollars. Under US law, foreign corruption charges can be pursued if they are linked to American investors or markets.
The Adani Group has denied the allegations, while the lawmakers’ intervention signals growing political scrutiny over the case.
