US President tells Zelensky ceasefire with Russia ‘very close’ amid talks on Ukraine’s resources

Washington: US President Donald Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday that a ceasefire with Russia is “very close” and described an agreement allowing the US to take over Ukraine’s natural resources as “very correct.” Trump made the remarks at the White House before signing the Mineral Resources Agreement.

During the meeting, Zelensky urged Trump not to reach a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin as negotiations continued to end the war following Moscow’s invasion. “There should be no compromise with a killer,” Zelensky said, presenting images of Russia’s war atrocities.

Despite his opposition to the Russia-US talks in Dubai, Zelensky has reportedly softened his stance, recognizing the necessity of US backing. His focus now is on securing a position at the negotiating table to maintain credibility among Ukrainians.

Zelensky also stressed the importance of US involvement in any European peacekeeping force deployed after a ceasefire. “It’s important, that’s what we want to talk about, it’s very important,” he told reporters.

However, Trump has refused to provide security guarantees or consider Ukraine’s NATO membership.
