125 inmates in Tihar jail test HIV positive, read details
New Delhi: Shocking news has emerged from Delhi’s Tihar Jail complex, which comprises three facilities: Tihar, Rohini, and Mandoli. A total of 125 inmates have tested positive for HIV.
However, the presence of HIV-positive prisoners is not a new issue. Additionally, 200 prisoners have been diagnosed with syphilis. This information was revealed following the recent medical screening of 10,500 prisoners. The complex houses approximately 14,000 inmates.
Medical screenings are conducted periodically in Tihar Jail. After the new Director General of Tihar Jail, Satish Golcha, took charge, a medical checkup was conducted on ten and a half thousand prisoners in May and June. During this screening, HIV tests were administered, and 125 prisoners were found to be HIV-positive.
Furthermore, out of the 10,500 prisoners screened, 200 were diagnosed with syphilis, a skin infection. No cases of tuberculosis (TB) were detected among the prisoners.
The Protective Survey Department of Tihar Jail, in collaboration with AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital, also conducted cervical cancer tests for female prisoners.
