AAP fields Khichi for MCD mayoral polls
New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday announced Devnagar ward councillor Mahesh Khichi as the party’s candidate for the mayoral election of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Aman Vihar councillor Ravinder Bhardwaj will be the party’s candidate for the post of deputy mayor, party leader Gopal Rai said at a press conference.
This year the MCD mayor will be elected from among the reserved category councillors. Rai said Khichi has been associated with the AAP since its inception in 2012. The term of the mayor is one year.
Both the candidates will file their nominations today. The AAP has 134 out of 250 councillors in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, making the election trail difficult for the two candidates.
The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has 104 councillors in the municipal corporation. The mayor will be elected at a meeting of councillors on April 26.
