Centre downgrades security cover for former PM Manmohan Singh’s spouse Gursharan Kaur

New Delhi: The Centre has downgraded the security cover of Gursharan Kaur, wife of late Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, from Z-plus to Z category, official sources said on Friday.

Kaur had earlier been accorded Z-plus security as a close family member of the former prime minister. However, following a recent review conducted by central intelligence agencies, the Union Home Ministry has instructed the VIP security wing of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to implement Z category protection norms.

As per the revised arrangement, around a dozen armed CRPF commandos will now be responsible for her personal and residential security. Sources added that the number of Delhi Police personnel assigned to Dr. Singh’s family has also been reduced in line with the security downgrade.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away on December 26 at the age of 92. In 2019, after changes were made to the Special Protection Group (SPG) Act, Dr. Singh was provided Z-plus category security by the CRPF, including the Advanced Security Liaison (ASL) protocol.
