Chandigarh court cancels 69 traffic challans issued for giving way to ambulances, VIP convoys
Chandigarh: The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Chandigarh, Sachin Yadav, has canceled 69 traffic challans issued to motorists who broke signals to give way to ambulances or VIP convoys. The decision was made following a request from the Chandigarh Traffic Police.
The police had approached the court, arguing that these challans were issued under genuine circumstances. Inspector-in-charge of the Police Command and Control Centre (PCCC), Sector 17, explained that CCTV cameras monitor traffic violations across Chandigarh.
The footage is processed through the ITMS e-challan smart city system, verified, and sent to the NIC-E challan portal before an automated SMS notification is issued to violators.
The court’s decision provides relief to drivers who had to break signals for emergency vehicles, ensuring they are not penalized for prioritizing safety.
