Congress criticises government over deportation of Indians from US

New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday criticised the Indian government over the deportation of 104 Indians from the United States, demanding a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

A US military plane carrying the deportees landed in Amritsar on Wednesday. The individuals were sent back as part of the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

Several deportees alleged that their hands and legs were tied during the journey and were only unshackled upon arrival at Amritsar airport.

Priyanka Gandhi questioned why the Indian government did not intervene, stating, “Modi ji and Trump ji are said to be good friends. Why did Modi ji allow this to happen? Couldn’t we have sent our own plane to bring them back?”

She also condemned the treatment of deportees, asking whether they should have been returned “in handcuffs and chains.”

She called for a response from the External Affairs Minister on the issue.
