Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed faces backlash for body shaming Rohit Sharma
New Delhi: Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed has sparked controversy after calling Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma the “fattest and worst captain.”
In a social media post, she criticized Sharma’s fitness and compared him to former captains Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, and Kapil Dev.
A new video has surfaced in which Mohamed defended her remarks, stating, “I said whatever I felt about Rohit Sharma. This is democracy, and I have the right to speak.”
Speaking to media, she clarified that her comments were about player fitness and not body shaming. “I have always believed that a player should stay fit, and I thought he was a little overweight, so I tweeted about it,” she said.
Following her remarks, cricket fans criticized Mohamed on social media. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also reacted, with secretary Devjit Saikia condemning her statement.
“It is very unfortunate that such a comment on our captain has come from a person in a responsible position. Currently, India is participating in an ICC tournament and is set to play the semi-finals,” Saikia told media.
