Congress suffered a setback: Delhi High Court refuses to grant relief in tax case

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed the Congress’ plea seeking a stay on income tax notices for the recovery of Rs 105 crore in tax dues.

The Congress party had approached the court in March 2024 regarding this matter. A bench headed by Justice Yashwant Varma stated that there are no grounds to interfere with the orders issued.

The move to approach the high court came after the Congress party’s application seeking a stay on the Income Tax Department’s February 13 notice to initiate recovery proceedings against the party was dismissed on March 8.

The Congress party has been asked by the Delhi High Court to present its arguments again before the ITAT. In February, the Income Tax Department froze four main bank accounts of the Congress party, demanding income tax of Rs 210 crore for the fiscal year 2018-19.

The party then approached the tribunal seeking a stay on the Income Tax Department’s action, stating that if their accounts were frozen, they would be unable to pay bills and salaries.
