Farmers invited to meeting with central government on February 14
New Delhi: The central government has invited farmers protesting at the Khanauri and Shambhu borders between Punjab and Haryana for a meeting in Chandigarh on February 14 at 5 pm.
Farmer leader Kaka Singh Kotra confirmed the invitation, stating that the government has agreed to discuss a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) and other demands. The farmers have accepted the invitation.
Meanwhile, farmer leaders have urged Jagjit Singh Dallewal to seek medical treatment. Dallewal has been on a fast unto death for 54 days, and the central government recently sent a delegation to assess his health.
Leaders of both Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are appealing to him to reconsider his stance.
Farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar said the government has cited the ongoing Delhi elections and the election code of conduct as reasons for delaying announcements regarding their demands.
Kotra’s statement followed a two-hour meeting between farmer representatives and central government officials. Decisions regarding compensation for the 121 farmers who have died during the protests are expected tomorrow.
The farmers have been protesting at the borders since February 13 last year after being denied permission to march to Delhi. Their demands include a legal guarantee for MSP and other agricultural reforms.
