Farmers warn of unrest as leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s health deteriorates during hunger strike
New Delhi: Punjab farmer leaders have raised concerns over the deteriorating health of Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a fast-unto-death for 43 days, demanding a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) and other measures.
They warned the situation could spiral out of control if the Central government fails to address the farmers’ demands.
Abhimanyu Kohar, a prominent farmer leader, urged the government to take the matter seriously, adding that Dallewal’s condition is critical and “anything can happen.”
Doctors monitoring Dallewal’s health reported a significant decline, with symptoms including low blood pressure and vomiting. A team of doctors conducted a health check-up at the Khanauri border, confirming he is unable to communicate.
In protest against the government’s inaction, farmers announced a series of nationwide demonstrations. On January 10, effigies of the BJP government will be burned, followed by the burning of draft copies of the National Policy on Agricultural Marketing during Lohri on January 13. The protests will culminate in tractor marches across the country on January 26.
Dr. Avtar Singh of the ‘5 Rivers Heart Association,’ who examined Dallewal, expressed grave concerns about his worsening health, stating, “His condition is deteriorating daily, and he remains at risk.”
