Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as India’s head coach under scrutiny after defeats
New Delhi: Head coach Gautam Gambhir is facing mounting pressure following a string of disappointing performances by the Indian cricket team.
Sources indicate that his position may come under serious review if the team fails to deliver in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Since Gambhir, 43, took over as head coach after Rahul Dravid’s tenure, the Indian team’s performance has shown little improvement. Notably, the team’s red-ball cricket record has been on a consistent decline.
Under Gambhir’s supervision, Team India faced a historic 0-3 whitewash in a home Test series against New Zealand. This was followed by a defeat in the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly dissatisfied with these outcomes, and further failure could lead to a significant decision regarding Gambhir’s role.
Gambhir’s tenure began with high expectations, especially after India won the T20 World Cup 2024 under Dravid’s leadership. However, the team has struggled to replicate past successes.
In a major setback, India lost an ODI series against Sri Lanka for the first time in 27 years, followed by a Test series defeat to New Zealand on home soil after 36 years.
The latest loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia has only intensified scrutiny on Gambhir. With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on the horizon, all eyes are on Team India’s performance and Gambhir’s ability to turn things around.
