Government hopeful of record production of wheat despite damage to crop due to bad weather

New Delhi: The government expects a record production of 112.1 million tonnes of wheat in 2022-23, Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said today.

The government has projected a record production of 112.1 million tonnes of wheat in the 2022-23 crop year (July-June). Centre will soon consider relaxing quality standards for wheat procurement in Punjab and Haryana.
On Monday, the Centre had said that the wheat crop is estimated to suffer 8-10 per cent loss due to the recent unseasonal rains and hailstorms in major producing states.
Last year, wheat production had dropped marginally to 107.7million tonnes due to heat wave conditions in some states. Chopra said that in the last two weeks, there has been some damage to the wheat crop due to bad weather.
The secretary said the quality parameters for procurement of wheat in Madhya Pradesh have been relaxed.
