Honey Singh’s new song sparks controversy on Bhojpuri film anniversary
Mumbai: Bhojpuri-speaking people marked February 22 as a day of pride, celebrating the anniversary of the first Bhojpuri film, Hey Ganga Maya Tohe Pyari Chadaibo, which was released in 1963.
The film not only established Bhojpuri cinema but also paved the way for future productions, with lyricist Shailendra and composer Chitragupta shaping the region’s musical landscape.
However, this year’s celebrations took a different turn as rapper Honey Singh’s new song Maniak, released on the same day, sparked controversy.
The song, which gained traction on social media, features Bhojpuri influences, including a segment sung by Ragini Vishwakarma, a popular figure in the Bhojpuri music scene.
The controversy revolves around this particular segment, which has been criticized for obscenity.
While explicit lyrics are not uncommon in Bhojpuri music, critics argue that the song crosses a line.
Bhojpuri songs have long featured lyrics describing women’s beauty, but concerns have been raised over the growing trend of explicit content.
