India in talks with US over trade framework amid ‘retaliatory tax’ concerns
New Delhi: India is in discussions with the United States to develop a framework under a bilateral trade agreement to address tax and market access issues, the External Affairs Ministry said on Friday.
The statement comes after US President Donald Trump announced that India and other countries would face “retaliatory taxes” starting April 2.
Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India is engaging with the US administration at “various levels” to finalize a trade agreement beneficial to both sides. However, he did not directly comment on whether India expects an exemption from the tax.
Trump had earlier indicated that Washington would not provide any exemptions to India under the new tax regime.
