India suspends Indus Water Treaty, cancels visas of Pakistani nationals after Pahalgam attack

New Delhi: A day after 26 people were killed in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to review the situation and formulate a response.

Following the high-level meeting, the government announced a series of measures, including the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty and cancellation of all visas issued to Pakistani nationals. The Attari integrated check post has been ordered to shut with immediate effect.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said the government has decided to expel the defence, navy, and air advisers from the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. Similarly, India will withdraw its own defence, navy, and air advisers from the High Commission in Islamabad.

Further, the government has barred Pakistani nationals from entering India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme. Any visas issued under this scheme will now be considered cancelled.

Pakistani citizens currently in India under this scheme have been given 48 hours to leave the country.
