Indian parliamentary panel to summon Meta chief over misinformation on Covid-19
New Delhi: Nishikant Dubey, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology and Communications, announced on Tuesday that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg will be summoned over an alleged “false statement” claiming the Indian government took no action against Covid-19.
“My committee will call Meta to respond to this misinformation. In any democratic country, misinformation tarnishes its image. That institution will have to apologize to the Indian Parliament and its people for this mistake,” Dubey said.
The committee’s move underscores concerns over the role of misinformation in damaging the reputation of democratic institutions. Further details about the summoning are awaited.
