India’s unemployment rate falls to six-year low of 3.2% between July 2022 and June 2023: Government data
New Delhi: Between July 2022 and June 2023, the unemployment rate for the age of 15 years and above was at a six-year low of 3.2 per cent in the India, government data revealed.
According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey Annual Report 2022-2023 released by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), the unemployment rate (UR) under normal conditions for people aged 15 years and above at the national level declined from 4.1 per cent in 2021-22 to 3.2 per cent in 2022-23 between July 2022 and June 2023.
Keeping in mind the importance of providing labour force data at a time-bound period, the NSSO had launched the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) in April 2017. “The unemployment rate in rural areas declined from 5.3 per cent in 2017-18 to 2.4 per cent in 2022-23. For urban areas, it has come down from 7.7 per cent to 5.4 per cent,” it said.
The survey revealed that the unemployment rate among men in India declined from 6.1 per cent in 2017-18 to 3.3 per cent in 2022-23. While the unemployment rate among women has come down from 5.6 percent to 2.9 percent.
