J&K CM orders inquiry into Gulmarg fashion show, says government never allows such events

Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Monday that his government does not permit such events at any time of the year, amid controversy over a fashion show held in Gulmarg during Ramzan.

“We have already ordered an inquiry, but preliminary findings indicate that it was a private event organized by a private party at a private hotel,” Abdullah told the Assembly.

The four-day event, which included the fashion show on December 7, has sparked outrage, with concerns raised over its impact on public sentiment.

Kashmir’s Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had earlier criticized the event, saying that obscenity in the name of tourism promotion would not be tolerated. “How can this be accepted in a valley known for its Sufi and religious culture?” he wrote on X.

Responding to the concerns, Abdullah stated that his office was in contact with local authorities and had sought a report within 24 hours. “Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” he said.

He also clarified that the government had no role in organizing the event. “It was a private gathering, held at a private hotel with privately distributed invitations. No government permission was sought, no public funds were used, and no government officials were involved,” he said.

Abdullah further said that if permission had been requested, it would not have been granted. “Some people argue that such events should not happen during Ramzan, but after reviewing the details, I believe they should not take place at any time of the year,” he added.

The government has assured strict action if any legal violations are found.
