Kartarpur Sahib Corridor remains open amid India-Pakistan tensions after Pahalgam attack

Amritsar: The future of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor project is facing uncertainty amid growing tensions between India and Pakistan following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Despite the strained diplomatic atmosphere, the corridor remained operational on Thursday, with devotees continuing to visit as usual.

However, the Indian government has not yet clarified whether the corridor project will proceed as planned or face suspension. Sources said that the BJP-led central government is in a difficult position regarding any drastic decision, especially as it seeks to strengthen its political base in Punjab, where Sikh support is seen as crucial.

Given the religious and emotional significance of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for the Sikh community, any move to alter its status could impact the BJP’s standing among Sikh voters.

On the other hand, Pakistan may also face financial setbacks if the corridor is shut down. The neighbouring country currently charges a fee of USD 20 per pilgrim at the Pakistan Integrated Check Post (ICP), generating considerable income from approximately 200 to 400 visitors daily, especially on weekends.

Despite repeated requests from India to waive the fee, Pakistan has remained firm on collecting the charges from Sikh pilgrims.
