Lathi-charge, tear gas shells fired at students’ rally in West Bengal
New Delhi: Police resorted to lathicharge and lobbed tear gas shells during a students’ rally here today. There was also a clash between the protesters and the police. Students’ organisations Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj and Sangrami Yuva Manch had announced their ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally today, even as the administration termed it illegal.
The main objective of the rally to the state secretariat is to demand the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the arrest of those involved in the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Apart from 6,000 police personnel, water cannons were deployed in the city. The West Banga Students’ Society is an unregistered student group, while the Sangrami Yuva Manch represents the state government employees, demanding dearness allowance at par with central government employees.
