Mamata Banerjee demands strict punishment for RG Kar doctor’s murder
Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday called the murdered woman doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital her “sister” and extended her deepest condolences to the victim’s parents.
Speaking at a special gathering of senior and junior doctors and medical students at Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium, Banerjee demanded strict punishment for those responsible for the crime.
“I express my condolences to the family of the sister who was killed at RG Kar Hospital. We demand appropriate punishment in the matter,” she said.
Banerjee also recalled her participation in protests against the incident. “I had also taken to the streets to protest against the incident. Our government had passed the Aparajita Bill, but it is still pending (with the President),” she added.
The case dates back to August 9 last year, when a 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and murdered at a government hospital in Kolkata, sparking nationwide outrage.
