Manipur observes bandh to mark two years since ethnic violence

Imphal: A bandh was observed across Manipur on Friday to mark two years since the outbreak of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in 2023, which left 260 people dead, nearly 1,500 injured, and around 70,000 displaced.

Normal life was disrupted as educational institutions remained closed and fewer vehicles were seen on the roads. The bandh was jointly called by the Meitei and Kuki communities in memory of those who lost their lives in the violence.

Security forces were deployed at key locations across the state as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incidents. Authorities said the situation remained under control throughout the day.

A candlelight march is scheduled to take place in Imphal this evening to pay tribute to the victims of the violence.
