Modi cabinet approves ‘One Nation, One Election’

New Delhi: The Modi government on Wednesday approved the report of a panel headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind titled ‘One Nation, One Election’. A bill in this regard (to hold simultaneous elections) is likely to be introduced in the upcoming winter session of Parliament.

Under the ‘One Nation, One Election’, it is proposed to hold parliamentary and assembly elections simultaneously. ‘One nation, one election’ has been approved under the 100-day agenda of the Modi government.

Prime Minister Modi has time and again highlighted the need and importance of linking elections under one schedule and stressed how the country has to pay the price to live in an election environment throughout the year.

A high-level committee headed by Ram Nath Kovind had submitted its report in March this year and recommended to the Election Commission (ECI) to prepare a common electoral roll and voter ID card in consultation with state election officials.
