PM Modi distributes 6.5 million Svamitva property cards

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today distributed 6.5 million proprietary property cards to residents in 10 states and two union territories under a scheme aimed at providing legal ownership of property in villages.

Speaking via video conferencing, Modi described the initiative as a significant step for rural communities and the economy.

The scheme, launched five years ago, seeks to offer legal proof of home ownership to villagers. Modi highlighted that property rights remain a critical issue globally, referencing a United Nations study that linked secure property rights to poverty reduction.

“Under this scheme, we have provided legal ownership documents to approximately 22.5 million people in villages,” he added.

PM Modi said that despite owning valuable property, villagers previously lacked the ability to leverage its full economic potential due to the absence of legal documentation. The initiative, he said, has unlocked economic activities worth over ₹100 lakh crore.

He further said that it is essential to use of advanced technology, such as drones, for mapping land and houses in villages to ensure accurate and efficient documentation.

“When our government came to power in 2014, we committed to resolving this issue. No government can afford to leave its rural population in such difficulties,” he said.
