PM Modi to visit Sri Lanka in April to finalize bilateral agreements
New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Sri Lanka in early April to finalize agreements signed during President Anuradha Kumar Dissanayake’s visit to Delhi last year, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijayta Herath said in Parliament.
Herath, speaking during a budget allocation debate, said Sri Lanka maintains close ties with India and highlighted that the first diplomatic visit of the new government was to Delhi, where several bilateral agreements were reached.
During Modi’s visit, new memorandums of understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed, and he will also inaugurate the Sampur Solar Power Station. In 2023, Sri Lanka’s Ceylon Electricity Board and India’s NTPC agreed to build a 135 MW solar power plant in Sampur, Trincomalee district.
Herath credited the National People’s Power (NPP) government’s goodwill policy towards India for securing multiple Indian-backed projects. He reiterated Sri Lanka’s commitment to a neutral foreign policy while prioritizing national interests. This will be Modi’s fourth visit to Sri Lanka since 2015.
