PM Modi visits Varanasi, seeks strict action in gang rape case

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi on Friday morning for a day-long visit and took detailed information about a gang rape case that has shocked the city.

He directed officials to take strict action against the culprits and to ensure such incidents do not occur in the future.

According to a statement issued by the Uttar Pradesh government, Modi was briefed on the case soon after landing at the Varanasi airport by the Commissioner of Police and the District Magistrate.

“He directed to take the strictest possible action against the culprits and take appropriate steps to prevent such incidents in future,” the statement said.

The case involves the alleged rape of a 19-year-old girl by 23 men over a period of six days. Police said the accused drugged the victim and took her to different hotels where she was raped. As of Monday, six people had been arrested in connection with the case.
