Pollution in cities like Delhi and Mumbai becomes deadly

New Delhi: Pollution accounts for an average of 7.2 per cent of the daily deaths in India’s 10 largest and most polluted cities, including Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. These deaths are the highest in Delhi. This has been revealed from the survey published in The Lancet Planetary Health Journal. These cities have been found to have PM 2.5 levels higher than the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Sources of pollution in these cities include vehicular and industrial emissions. Daily exposure to PM2.5 pollution in Indian cities is associated with a higher risk of death and local pollution could potentially lead to these deaths, the researchers said.

The international team included researchers from Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi and the Centre for Chronic Disease Control, New Delhi.
