Punjab Police to bring seven Amritpal Singh associates from Assam today

Chandigarh: Seven associates of Amritpal Singh, MP from Khadoor Sahib, will be brought to Punjab from Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam on Thursday, officials said.

Amritpal Singh was released after charges under the National Security Act (NSA) were dropped but was later re-arrested by Punjab Police in connection with an alleged attack on a police station near Amritsar in 2023. Police obtained his transit remand from a local court.

A 25-member Punjab Police team has been in Dibrugarh for the past few days to oversee the transfer of Singh’s associates, all linked to the ‘Waris Punjab De’ (WPD) outfit. A senior official said the detainees would be sent to Punjab under tight security, with legal formalities being completed.

The seven prisoners—Kulwant Singh, Harjit Singh, Gurinder Pal Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Bhagwant Singh alias Pradhan Mantri Bajeke, Daljit Singh Kalsi, and Basant Singh—were released from Dibrugarh jail in batches over the past three days after their NSA detention expired.

“They will be taken to Punjab on two different commercial flights,” an official said. Three detainees have already been brought to Mohanbari airport for an IndiGo flight, while the remaining four will travel later in the day.

The Punjab Police team, led by SP Harinder Singh Gill, is finalizing legal procedures in Dibrugarh. The remaining three detainees, including Amritpal Singh, are also expected to be transferred to Punjab by mid-2025, the official added.
