At the same time, there was a decrease in road accidents in Ludhiana district of the state. The number of deaths in road accidents this year has seen a decrease as compared to last year.
According to the Ministry of Road and Transport, around 364 people lost their lives in road accidents this year, down from 380 deaths recorded in 2021, but Ludhiana still tops the list with a fatality rate of 78 per cent.
In Ludhiana, the ranking has improved by one point due to a decrease in the death rate. Earlier in 2021, Ludhiana city was ranked 14th. With the latest report of death rate in road accidents, Ludhiana has now reached the 15th position.
Dr Kamal Soi, a member of the National Road Safety Council, said the figures included in the report may be different from the actual number of deaths on roads, as the authorities have included only spot deaths in the report.
The authorities have not included cases in which the police take action under Section 174 of the CrPC in case of settlement between the accused and the families of the victims.
