Rahul Gandhi becomes wrestler, enters Akhada to meet Bajrang Punia in Jhajjar
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today met Olympic bronze medallist Bajrang Punia and other wrestlers in Haryana’s Jhajjar in the wake of a controversy over the selection of Sanjay Singh, a confidant of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, as the president of the Wrestling Federation of India.
Bajrang had last week announced to return his Padma Shri award in protest against Sanjay Singh’s victory in the Sangh elections.
Gandhi, a former Congress president, met the wrestlers at the Varinder Akhara. Bajrang started his wrestling career from this arena. Bajrang later told reporters, “Rahul Gandhi had come to see our training. He wrestled and exercised with me. He had come to see what a wrestler’s daily life was like.”
