Ravichandran Ashwin announces retirement from international cricket
New Delhi: India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Wednesday announced his immediate retirement from international cricket, a decision that stunned fans and teammates alike.
The announcement came during a joint press conference with skipper Rohit Sharma after the third Test against Australia in Brisbane ended in a draw.
“This is my last day as a cricketer for the Indian team. I won’t take too much of your time,” Ashwin said before leaving the press conference without taking further questions.
Ashwin, who ranks second on India’s all-time Test wicket-takers list with 537 dismissals, second only to Anil Kumble (619), stated that he will continue to play club cricket. During his illustrious career, Ashwin showcased his versatility, including taking a wicket in a pink-ball Test in Adelaide.
Rohit Sharma addressed the media following Ashwin’s departure, saying, “He is very confident about his decision. We must respect his will.”
Before the announcement, Ashwin was seen sharing an emotional moment with former captain Virat Kohli in the dressing room. “Ashwin is another name for skill, talent, and innovation,” Rohit added, reflecting on the off-spinner’s impact on Indian cricket.
