SC calls Kolkata murder case a “Systematic Failure Across the Country”
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has described the ongoing trial of Kar, accused in the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at the Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, as emblematic of a broader issue affecting the entire nation.
During the hearing, Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud remarked, “This is not just a murder case in Kolkata, but a systematic failure across the country. This issue concerns the safety of doctors nationwide.”
The bench, led by Chief Justice Chandrachud, has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, underscoring the court’s recognition of its national implications. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, assured the court of their full cooperation in the matter. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal appeared on behalf of the West Bengal government.
Additionally, the Delhi Medical Association has petitioned the Supreme Court, seeking to be included as a party in the ongoing case, citing the widespread concern over the safety and security of medical professionals across India.
