SC grants Punjab government three weeks to respond in Bargari sacrilege case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court heard the petition related to the Bargari sacrilege case on February 3, granting the Punjab government three weeks to file its response. However, Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh did not receive any relief in the case. The next hearing is scheduled for March 18.

On Monday, the Supreme Court stayed the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s order that had halted the trial of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in the 2015 sacrilege cases of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Rahim’s counsel argued that the Punjab government had initially assigned the case to the CBI, which later closed the investigation.

He claimed that the state’s decision to withdraw the CBI’s consent after two years was unlawful.

A Punjab government representative countered that this was the third round of litigation, emphasizing that Rahim was not named as an accused by the CBI but by the state police.

The official added that Rahim’s whereabouts remain unknown since the case was transferred.
