SC to hear plea on reopening Punjab highways on December 9
New Delhi: The Supreme Court is set to hear a petition on December 9 seeking the reopening of highways blocked by protesting farmers in Punjab and Haryana.
The petition, filed by a social activist from Punjab, urges the court to direct the Central and State Governments to ensure that national highways and railway tracks remain unobstructed.
The protesting farmers, under the banners of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have been stationed at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13.
The plea alleges that the farmers have permanently blocked several national and state highways, causing significant inconvenience to the public.
According to the Supreme Court’s case list, the matter will be heard by a bench headed by Justice Surya Kant. The petition seeks immediate action to resolve the situation, emphasizing the need to balance the right to protest with public convenience.
