Sexual harassment case: Two FIRs registered against Brij Bhushan, POCSO Act also invoked
New Delhi: The Delhi Police has registered two FIRs against Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh following allegations of sexual harassment levelled against them by seven women wrestlers, including a minor. Both the FIRs have been registered at the Connaught Place police station, a senior police officer said.
The first FIR has been registered under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, which also includes certain sections of the IPC relating to outraging the modesty of a woman. The second FIR pertains to a detailed investigation into the allegations levelled by the adult complainant. The official said both the FIRs are being probed in true sense.
Earlier in the day, the Delhi Police had told the Supreme Court that it has decided to register an FIR in connection with allegations of sexual harassment levelled against Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh by seven women wrestlers.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Delhi Police, told a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha that the FIR will be lodged today itself.
Mehta had told the bench, “We have decided to register an FIR. It will be registered today. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the wrestlers, placed an affidavit in a sealed cover in the court. The affidavit had expressed apprehensions about the safety of the minor girl, a victim of alleged sexual abuse.
“Keeping in mind the contents placed on record, we direct the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, to review the threats being received by the wrestlers and provide adequate security to the minor girl, who was one of the victims,” the bench said in its order.
The bench said it should be informed by May 5 about the steps to be taken for the protection of the minor. Sibal had said that there are seven complainants, including a minor, and all of them should be given protection.
