Supreme Court directs Punjab government to shift Jagjit Singh Dallewal to Makeshift hospital near Khanauri border
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed the Punjab government to transfer farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a fast unto death for 24 days, to a Makeshift hospital near the Khanauri border. The court emphasized that the 70-year-old’s health must be monitored round the clock.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan instructed Punjab’s Advocate General Gurminder Singh to file an affidavit confirming the transfer.
During the hearing, Singh informed the court that Dallewal was cooperating with medical tests, including ECG and blood examinations, and that his health is stable at present.
Earlier, the court had urged the Punjab government to persuade Dallewal to undergo a comprehensive medical check-up. The bench criticized the state for its delay in conducting necessary medical evaluations and suggested temporarily halting the fast for medical intervention.
It also proposed replacing Dallewal with another protester during his treatment, citing the example of civil rights activist Irom Sharmila’s case.
Dallewal has been at the forefront of the protest near the Khanauri border, advocating for farmers’ rights.
