Supreme Court reprimands Punjab government over farmer leader Dallewal’s death fast

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Thursday criticized the Punjab government for allegedly creating a misleading impression in the media regarding farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s ongoing fast unto death. The case was heard by a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan.

The bench clarified that the court had not directed anyone to break or end Dallewal’s protest, emphasizing that its primary concern was his health and ensuring he received immediate medical attention.

Justice Surya Kant expressed displeasure over statements made by Punjab officials and some farmer leaders, calling them “irresponsible” and suggesting that they were complicating the situation.

“We need to examine the genuine seriousness of some farmer leaders towards Dallewal,” he remarked.

Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh denied any intent to escalate the situation, stating that efforts were being made to persuade Dallewal to accept medical assistance without abandoning his fast.

The court, noting the virtual presence of Punjab Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) during the proceedings, instructed them to convey the court’s concerns to the state government.

Both officials were also directed to submit affidavits confirming compliance with the court’s December 20 order, which mandated shifting Dallewal to nearby government medical facilities.
