Supreme Court to farmers: Submit demands directly
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has reiterated its willingness to address farmers’ demands and suggestions, stating that farmers can approach the court directly or through authorized representatives.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan made the observation while hearing a plea regarding the ongoing farmers’ protest.
The court also expressed concern over the deteriorating health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a fast unto death at the Khanauri border for the past 22 days.
The apex court directed the Punjab government to provide immediate medical assistance to Dallewal.
Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh informed the court that the state government had engaged in meetings with Dallewal and other farmer leaders but noted that they had declined to engage with the high-powered committee established by the Supreme Court.
Singh further said that the committee had invited the farmers for talks on December 17, but no meeting took place. The state government has been consistently encouraging the protesting farmers to engage in dialogue and suggested that they could directly submit their demands to the court.
