Tamil Nadu CM calls for legal action over Lok Sabha delimitation; Kerala, Punjab CMs accuse BJP of bias
New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced that legal measures will be taken in the fight over the Lok Sabha constituency delimitation issue, while Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has accused the BJP of politicizing the matter.
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-backed Joint Action Committee (JAC) held its first meeting on the proposed delimitation, stressing the need for “fair demarcation,” non-reduction of representation, and the use of population as a criterion to determine parliamentary seats.
Addressing the gathering, Stalin proposed renaming the committee as the ‘Joint Action Committee for Fair Delimitation’ and suggested forming a panel of experts to prepare a legal and political action plan.
“We are not against delimitation, but we want fair demarcation. Continuous action is necessary to protect our rights,” Stalin said. He also emphasized the importance of raising public awareness and pressuring the central government on the issue.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who attended the meeting, alleged that the BJP aims to increase seats in states where it performs well and reduce seats in states where it struggles.
“The BJP does not win in Punjab. At present, they do not have a single seat out of 13. The South is suffering. Is the South being punished for reducing the population?” Mann questioned.
The meeting comes amid concerns from opposition leaders over the Centre’s proposed delimitation of parliamentary seats, which they claim could disproportionately impact states in southern India.
