Tourist killed on Jammu-Srinagar highway; six rescued from snow-bound Mughal Road
Srinagar: A woman tourist lost her life on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway after a massive boulder fell from a hill and struck a minibus in the Meher area of Ramban district, officials reported. The incident highlights the growing dangers posed by adverse weather conditions in the region.
Meanwhile, police rescued six people trapped in heavy snow on Mughal Road in Poonch district. The stranded individuals were traveling in two vehicles from Shopian to Surankote on Friday night when the vehicles became stuck at Chhatapani. A police team responded promptly, successfully evacuating the passengers to safety, officials confirmed.
The Jammu-Srinagar national highway, Mughal Road, and Srinagar-Leh highway remain closed due to severe snowfall. Sinthan Road, which connects Bandipora to Gurez, as well as routes to Tangdhar in Kupwara and Kishtwar from Anantnag, have also been shut.
Authorities have advised commuters to avoid travel on these routes until further notice. Heavy snowfall has disrupted daily life across the Kashmir Valley, with efforts underway to restore power supply and clear key roads in Srinagar and surrounding areas.
The Meteorological Department has forecast continued rain and snow across Jammu and Kashmir over the next 24 hours.
