Union Cabinet approves ropeways for Hemkunt Sahib, Kedarnath Dham, read full details
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved two ropeway projects in Uttarakhand to ease the journey to Hemkunt Sahib and Kedarnath Dham, both located in the state’s mountainous terrain.
One ropeway will connect Govindghat to Hemkunt Sahib, while the other will run from Sonprayag to Kedarnath Dham. The Hemkunt Sahib Trust expects these projects to significantly benefit devotees and increase the number of pilgrims in the coming years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared the news on X, stating, “The construction of these ropeways will not only save time but also make the journey easier for devotees.”
Details of the Hemkunt Sahib ropeway
According to a press note from the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the Hemkunt Sahib ropeway project will cost approximately Rs 2,730.13 crore. The 12.4-km-long project will be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model in a public-private partnership.
The ropeway from Govindghat to Ghangaria, spanning 10.55 km, will use a monocable detachable gondola system. The final 1.85 km stretch from Ghangaria to Hemkunt Sahib will feature an advanced tricable detachable gondola (3S) system.
