Vanuatu to revoke Lalit Modi’s citizenship over extradition concerns

New Delhi: Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat has ordered the Citizenship Commission to revoke the passport issued to former Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi, the Vanuatu Daily Post reported.

The decision comes amid reports that Modi, a fugitive from Indian authorities, sought Vanuatu citizenship to evade extradition. Several international media outlets have highlighted concerns over his attempts to avoid legal proceedings in India.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said that Interpol had twice declined to issue an alert against Modi, which had initially allowed his passport application to be approved.

Despite background checks, he was not found guilty of any crime at the time of issuance.
