WhatsApp bans 84 lakh accounts in India to curb fraud

New Delhi: WhatsApp has taken a major step to prevent fraud by banning 84.5 lakh accounts in India in August 2024, according to its latest transparency report.

Meta, the platform’s parent company, stated that 16.6 lakh accounts were immediately removed due to serious rule violations, while the rest were banned after investigation.

The report also revealed that 16 lakh accounts were identified and deleted before any complaints were received. In August, WhatsApp received 10,707 user complaints, with action taken on 93% of them.

Meta removes accounts for violations such as bulk messaging, spam, fraud, and misinformation. User complaints help the company identify and take action against harmful accounts.
