Canada’s new PM Mark Carney rejects Trump’s threats, vows to prioritize trade tensions

Toronto: Canada’s newly sworn-in Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has dismissed US President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to integrate Canada into the United States, stating that his country will “never, in any way, be part of the United States.”

Carney, who took office as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister on Friday, said his top priority would be addressing Trump’s tariffs.

He expressed hope that his government could eventually work with Washington to advance mutual interests.

Government officials are working to arrange a call between Carney and Trump in the coming days. Tensions between the two countries have escalated since Trump returned to power in January, particularly after he declared a trade war and suggested making Canada the 51st US state.
