PM Carney rules out NDP partnership, vows tough economic reforms

Toronto: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, in his first press conference since winning the election, said his government would take tough decisions to revive the country’s struggling economy.

He said that making major economic changes is the need of the hour and added that lessons had been learned from the failures of past governments.

Carney, a former governor of the central banks of both Canada and Britain, admitted that economic reforms would not be easy but expressed confidence in his government’s ability to deliver.

“We will do whatever it takes to get the economy back on track,” he said.

Addressing concerns about his minority government, Carney ruled out any partnership with the New Democratic Party (NDP). He clarified that while his party fell short of a majority in Parliament, it had received a majority of votes and would govern independently.

The Prime Minister also announced that he will travel to Washington on May 5 and hold talks with US President Donald Trump on May 6. The meeting will focus on addressing the negative impact of tariff barriers on bilateral trade.
